What do you get when you take the very best qualities of porn, the very best qualities of erotic art, and the very best qualities of self-expression, and put them all together in one place? The answer that comes to mind instantly is I Shot Myself. Impossible to categorize, it is part pornography, part erotic photography, part artistic self-expression, part public art project, and part online community. If you've never heard of I Shot Myself, let me introduce you to the way it works: Girls from all over the world take off their clothes and photograph themselves nude (or in various stages of nudity), and send the resulting images to ISM, which provides a place where all these isolated artists/models can show their work and enjoy others'. And of course, the rest of the world can enjoy all of this as well (in exchange for a membership fee).
Admittedly, the idea is not completely original. In fact the idea of soliciting amateurs to take photos and videos of themselves and selling the result is probably as old or older as online porn itself. However, there is an enormous difference between the first sites to try to do this and ISM. ISM is all about real people putting themselves out there in the most public way possible (what is more public than the internet?) in the most private way possible (naked). I suppose ISM is technically 'amateur porn', but describing that way strikes me as similar to calling an exquisitely delicate fine wine 'booze'. The reason ISM is so different from amateur porn, is that it is not presented as pornography, or at least not as most pornography is presented. The presentation is extremely sophisticated, and perhaps what sets it apart more than anything is the quality of the writing. This may seem unimportant, but the ISM credo and other texts on the site are so well written that they make the site feel not like porn, but like a very intelligent and intriguing artistic experiment, which perhaps, is what it is.
On the technical side, another thing that differentiates ISM from self-shot amateur porn is the quality of the images themselves. ISM has very strict rules as to the type of digital camera used in these self-shoots, and completely bans the low-quality webcam type images which are so prevalent in amateur porn. The size and quality of the images vary somewhat, of course, because each artist uses a different camera, but all the images are quite large and very high quality.
Each shoot is called a 'folio' on ISM, and some contributors have done many for the site. At the time of my review there were 1,630 folios online from 1,450 artists. This adds up to 67,700 images on the site in total. There are two levels of membership (or sponsorship as ISM calls it): Prime, and Extra. 'Prime' gives access to about 2/3 of the images on the site as well as the daily updates, and the slightly more expensive 'Extra' includes 7 extra updates each week.
Both sponsorship levels allow access to ISM videos. These short video clips (2 to 4 minutes) are often footage of an artist shooting stills of herself, however they can be nearly anything, from self-filmed public nudity, to philosophical conversation, to sexual stories, to singing (all nude, of course).
The self-shooting format of the site leads to the fact that there are not only 1,450 different girls on the site, but 1,450 different photographers as well. This leads to probably the greatest variety in photographic styles of any erotic photography site. Some of the folios are photographically quite to-the-point, but every once and a while you will find one that it is truly incredible. This may seem hard to believe, but some of my very favorite erotic photographs come not from any of the professional pay-sites like Hegre, Galitsin, and Met-Art, but from the artists of I Shot Myself.
As for personal touch, it's hard to imagine how a site could be
more personal than ISM. As for honesty, no photographer, no matter how
skilled, knows the subject as well as the subject herself. Seeing girls
the way they want to be seen is an incredible experience that pornography
almost never provides. Luckily, the founders of ISM saw the problem and
got right to work on a solution. I Shot Myself is a porn/art site for the
sophisticated adult, but it trades none of its eroticism for its
sophistication, and the result is not only extremely erotic, but positive,
liberating and thought-provoking as well. Click Here to Visit I Shot Myself
